Duke's Place - Australian songs in concert & session with Margaret Bradford, Friday 12th June 2015, 7.30 to 11.30pm

Margaret Bradford  has been a name in the Australian folk scene as a singer/songwriter for over 30 years, and a member of the Bush Music Club for most, if not all of that time!

Her songs of conscience, humour and compassion reflect contemporary, environmental and social issues. She is able to bring out the heartfelt essence of a song. 

Margaret's recordings cover many themes. Songs in her repertoire reflect an interest in the environment, women, children and indigenous peoples. 

In 1994 Margaret was featured in an episode of ABC Radio's Songs and Stories of Australia telling the story of her mother and grandmother in the dairy-farming area around Coffs Harbour.

She sings in the duo Merryweather with Margaret Essex who will join her at Duke's.

Report on Tails from the Past

Rain - no rain - more rain - no rain - scattered showers - in weather-speak, the day in a nutshell. We were listed on the program for a 60 minute performance, but were introduced 30 mins. early, then asked to finish at the booked time! Nothing daunts Allen Davis, & Concert Party had no trouble filling the time, tho a few songs were repeated to answer requests by audience members. When one of the Light Horsemen said he lived in Goulburn that was the excuse to sing every song with the slightest connection to that historic city.

Local Federal Member Anthony Albanese was among the dignitaries present, and as he had inspected the Light Horse party, we asked him to inspect Concert Party.

Wattle was unique in many respects – it was the first Australian record label to have a major hit record on the Australian record charts; the first to make dramatised and animated films of bush ballads; the first to commercially release recordings of didgeridoo playing and Aboriginal traditional songs; the first to invent and use a portable recording desk and a synchronised film and audio tape machine and the first to have Australian bush music played on television - on ABCTV.  History of Wattle Records from The National Library catalogue

The Bushwhackers made records for Wattle Records from 1955 to 1957 and their Bush Songs helped keep the wolf from Wattle's door for a few years. Their 78 rpm recording of The Drover's Dream, with Alan Scott singing, sold 20,000 copies in 1956!    ** reference below  very scratchy video of Drover's dream
