Duke's Place - posts on Folk Federation's website jam.org.au

Introduction to our first concert, February 2014 -

Duke's place, named after our honoured early member Harold 'Duke' Tritton (1886-1965), will be the place to go once a month for a great night of Australian songs in concert and session.

Duke was a very early member of BMC, a powerful singer who supplied BMC with many songs he had learnt in his younger days while working as a shearer and at other bush jobs. He was also a songwriter and poet giving us songs that have entered the tradition such as Sandy Hollow Line and Shearing in the Bar.

Our final concert before the COVID lockdown was held in March 2020 with Melbourne-based singer songwriter Enda Kenny

Duke's Place with Dingo's Breakfast, Friday 8th May, 2020, 7.30 for 8pm CANCELLED

Bush Music Club, Tritton Hall, Hut 44, Addison Road Centre, 142 Addison Road , Marrickville, Friday 8th May, 2020, 7.30 for 8pm
Roger Montgomery & John Angliss, are Dingo’s Breakfast, WA’s popular touring folk act.

The Dingo’s Breakfast tour every summer in the eastern states of Australia, appearing at the very best of the festivals, clubs and venues.

With decades of performance experience under their belts, The Dingo’s Breakfast present an electrically eclectic dialectic selection of Oz Music, Poetry and Yarnspinning, with the accent firmly on Comedy... Beauty!

Dingo’s Breakfast concerts are a wonderful mix of Traditional and Contemporary Australian and Irish Songs, lavishly salted with an edgy slam of Performance Poetry. The Dingos have comprehensively proved that Performance Poetry is not just for breakfasts any more.

Duke's Place - Australian songs in concert, 2nd Fridays February to December, 7.30 for 8pm start
$10, bring a contribution for supper

Park in the car park and follow the path on the right side of the big hall - the Hut is across the grass, decorated with dancers & musicians.

Duke's place, named after our honoured early member Harold 'Duke' Tritton (1886-1965), is the place to go once a month for a great night of Australian songs. Duke was a powerful singer who supplied BMC with many songs he had learnt in his younger days while working as a shearer and at other bush jobs. He was also a songwriter and poet giving us songs that have entered the tradition such as Sandy Hollow Line and Shearing in the Bar.

Enda was born and raised in Dublin before settling in his adopted hometown of Melbourne in 1987.
His belonging to his new land is evident in songs like Language of the Land, a powerful cry for reconciliation with Australia’s Indigenous people, yet, like his birth country, Enda can seamlessly shift from the deeply poignant to the craic and entertain audiences with quirky, witty lyrics.

He has released eight acclaimed albums, most recently Kitchen Ballads, but Enda spent a decade juggling recording and performing with a full-time career in public housing. He left his day job to return to music in 2013.

Enda’s back catalogue of recorded work provides a perfect introduction to his stories of life, love and justice, but it is on stage where he truly shines.

A regular performer at some of Australia’s best-known festivals including Port Fairy Folk Festival, Woodfork Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival. He is also a multi-award winner having twice taken home Port Fairy Folk Festival’s prestigious songwriting award. Enda’s 2005 album Here and There won the peer-reviewed Australian Folk Alliance’s Album of the Year award.A true Irish storyteller, Enda’s well-crafted lyrics are backed by tunes that enrich and complete his narratives.

Enda Kenny is probably the best Irish songwriter living outside of Ireland (Colum Sands)

Garry is returning to Dukes, after an absence of 5 years.

Garry Tooth sings "Foggy Dew" at Bowral Folk, Blues and Beyond 2008

I was born in Central Queensland and later moved to Brisbane. I started singing old bush ballads in the late 1950s and helped form the Moreton Bay Bushwackers. In 1960 three of us formed The Wayfarers and were employed at the Primitif Coffee Lounge.

In 1964 we were involved in setting up the Brisbane Folk Centre. From 1970 I was working as a singer in various restaurants around Sydney.

From 2000 until 2006 I sang at my own cafe The Whistlestop at Thirlmere. I have a passion for the story in the song and have developed a repertoire of Australian, Irish, English and Scottish folk songs.

Report on Shortis & Simpson @ Dukes, Sat 21st December 2019

How Good Is 2019?

A satirical look at the events and characters of the year we’ve almost survived

In a year when the Prime Minister is writing their titles for them, Canberra’s leading musical satirists, Shortis and Simpson, confirm what a stunning year this has been as they take you on a roller coaster ride through the stories and characters that have made 2019 so memorable.

2019 - the year when the unwinnable election was won, Abbott fell off his bike, the polls were up the pole, and Shorten fell short. When Greenland was almost sold, journalists were raided by the AFP, a cardinal lost his appeal, and Aldi shopping bags became the new method of making political donations.

Yes, in the year when the election gave us ScoMo, the ALP gave us Albo, and Brexit gave us BoJo, John Shortis and Moya Simpson (JoSho and Simmo) reckon that all you can do is laugh. So join them as they go Morrison dancing, and prove, in the words of The Titanium Man himself-
How Good Is 2019?
