The first Newsletter was published in October 1955, & the last Newsletter/Calendar we have was issued in January 1977, & the January 1978 Calendar was also issued with Mulga Wire.

March 1966

1.  Moving to 189 Clarence St.  Workshop nights every Tuesday. National Song Competition with $60 prize.  Project '66 on TCN9 Gold in Australia, background music by Concert Party, 2nd April. Plans for a Lawson  Anniversary excursion to Mudgee in September & Eureka Anniversary Dinner in December. Current Dispute - songs for the next Festival record.

2.  Urgently needed - Archivist to take charge of valuable and sometimes irreplaceable material.  Election results. BMC books & records for sale.

June/July 1966

1.Things are going well in new room.  National Song Contest details. 

2.  Functions - Henry Lawson night 21st June, Jack Donahoe night - September. Lawson excursion to Mudgee September.  Ned Kelly night - November. Mary Gilmore & Eureka Stockade night - December. Xmas party. Wanted - guitar teacher for Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs. Publications available.

January 1967 (first issue since June/July 1966)

1. No newsletter has been issued since last July, but we have had an exceptionally good year as far as attendance has been concerned.  Beer & Cheese nights, BBQ, Nigerian music educator Mr Dayo Dedeke visited,  taught a Nigerian song & took away Singabouts to teach from. Library of Congress wants Newsletters. Other international enquiries from Mexico, Italy Denmark & others. Concert Party has been busy, but couldn't fit in all performances.  Royalties come in from earlier records & John Meredith's play Wild Colonial Boy.  BBC has still not paid anything for using our music on Down the Darling.

2.  National Song Contest details. Publications & records available. As Singabout has been held up by Editor's illness, members were sent Songs of Australia, the only club publication put out in 1966, with this newsletter.

April 1967





AGM - President Frank Maher, Vice-President Harry Glendinning, Secretary Dale Denagte, Asst Secretary Jamie Carlin, Treasurer Barbara Gibbons, Concert Party Leader John Dengate, Editor Eric Bolton, Sub-Editor Harry Glendinning, Publications manager Carolyne Purser, Master of Ceremonies Chris Woodland. We were unable to distribute Singabout during 1966. All financial members received Songs of Stan Wakefield. Singabout 6(1) is almost ready. Singabout evening Sat 1st July

Festival Records have been asked if Songs of Lawson will be ready by June Singabout night. National Song Competition is open until 31st July. Concert Party - very successful and enjoyable visti to Gulgong in January, numerous engagements since include Firemen's & Engine Driver's Smoko, Irish Musicians St. Patrick celebrations, Paddington Welfare Centre, Riverwood Eventide Homes. Recent Workshop nights have been well attended and thoroughly enjoyed. Programme organised by Chris Woodland. May - Ben Hall night 9th, Dance night 27th.  June - Centenary of Lawson's Birth 13th, Dance night 27th.  July - Stan Wakefield night 18th.  August - Songs from the Convicts 15th, DAnce nights 29th.  September - Jack Donahoe night 12th.  October - Labor Day 10th, Dance night 24th.  November - Ned Kelly Night 14th.  December - Eureka Stockade & Mary Gilmore Night 5th. Christmas Party 19th.  Dance nights are not Beer & cheese nights.

July 1967

1. Workshop nights at 189 Clarence St. There were many Lawson related functions in June including Lawson Centenary night on 13th, a Pilgrimage on 17th to Lawson Statue in the Domain, attended by ladies & gentlemen dressed as characters in Lawson's prose & verse, & about 60 people some dressed up attended party at Glendinning's place the same evening. 1st July Singabout theme was Lawson. Concert Party sang at a Lawson party for Australian (sic) Book Company at Engadine. They also played for the Wild Colonial Days Society, & some members appeared on ABC TV's This Day Tonight, & sang for Ausralasian (sic) Book Society's launch of "The Ashes of the Angry Years." They have also performed on 2 occasions for a group raising funds for the Aboriginal Children Advancement Society. Release of Concert Party's record was delayed by the record company so missed these events.

2.  However the record was promoted widely, including giving the club 12 promotional copies. POEMS IN MUSIC (Henry Lawson poems set to traditional music by the Bush Music Club). Next Singabout will be 14th October at 535 George St. Next picnic Oct 15th at Sutherland. Singabout 6(2) is almost ready, next fundraiser will be Friday 11th August. National Song Competition had a dozen entries, & closes soon. Beer & Cheese nights, Aug 15- Songs from the convicts, Oct 10 - Labor day, Nov 14 - Ned Kelly night, Dec 5 - Eureka stockade & Mary Gilmore, Dec 19 Christmas Party. September 1967


1. Workshops nights on Tuesdays, 189 Clarence St.  Farewell to MC Chris Woodland who is leaving Sydney. Contributions are wanted for Singabout 6(2). Concert Party has been busy & are rehearsing for their  trip to Bathurst & for their next record, on the songs of Stan Wakefield. Janet Wakefield received Life Membership at the recent Stan Wakefield night.

2. Next Singabout evening 14th October. Annual picnic day 15th October. National Song competition had 20 entries.  Dates to remember.

3. Tentative plans for a film night Friday 3rd November, to show Three in One & The Sentimental Bloke and more. Publications available. (Dale Dengate Secretary)

March 1964

1. Annual Meeting 31st March. Concert Party is appearing on Dave Allen Show, Duke Tritton appeared there a few weeks before. Collector's Group meeting on 17th April. A picnic day & a record evening at Carlin's place are suggested.

2. Two or three hundred folks clubs are operating in England. Next Singabout magazine is due after Easter. Reedy River has played to fill houses since December 7th & is closing. As Doris Fitton said  the only way to make money in Sydney Theatre is to put on Peter Pan or Reedy River. Review of Irish night .

3. Coral Dasey will be appearing on TV in a country & western music show. She also appeared in Reedy River with Frank & Tony. Sing Out (US) is planning an international Folk Direcory. BMC can arrange subscriptions to Sing Out. Gary Shearston has a new LP out - Folk Songs and Ballads of Australia. Concert Party appeared on new TV program "Today."  Concert Party attended Edgar Penzig's Wild Colonial Days Society meeting & taught dances.

May 1964


1.  Coming Events - social night at Carlin's place to listen to records. Singabout night 6th June. Annual Campfire Evening 27th June. Next Collector's group meeting - no date.

2. Workshop nights every Tuesday. Death of Ola Whalan. 10th Birthday in October. Letter from Western Australian subscribing to Singabout by Bush Music Club of Perth which was established in June 1963 by Mrs D. Cross from Caringbah (NSW). One of their members Ian Conochie recently enjoyed a visit to BMC Sydney.

3.  BMC members attended the launch of John Manifold's Who wrote the Ballads?, he also attended a workshop night.

4. Pix (magazine) record of Marion Henderson, Don Burrows & Lyn Christie with historical notes by John Meredith. Two cameramen from Pix attended the club recently taking photos for an article in 16th May issue. Results of Election. BMC will be listed in new Pink Pages under Organisations, with Janet Wakefield's number.  (Edited by A. Banks)

July 1964

1.  Review of record evening. Next Social will be at Scott's place on 26th July.  Singabout night 8th August. Tuesday workshops. Suggested visit to Fort Denison/Pinchgut.

2. 10th Birthday weekend at Currawong & Singabout Songster will be available then. Song Competiton with a prize for the best setting of a Lawson poem. Personal - Dengate Wedding. Coral & George Dasey (daughter & father) appeared on Dave Allen's Tonight show, singing George's The Ten Commandments.

3.  Duke Tritton's Time Means Tucker is coming out in a paperback edition. Gary Shearston's 3nd LP being released soon. Review of Campfire night.

4.Letter for Bert Doll in Perth. Article by Ian Turner  in Australian Tradition on children's games.

September 1964

1.  10th Anniversary - Anniversary dinner 25th September, Judging of Lawson song 22nd September. October long weekend Currawong weekend. Folksong Heritage  concert 10th October.

2.17th October, Singabout night. Display at Wynard Bank of NSW. Concert group. Folklore Study Group has been formed with Ken Fairey as contact.

3. Singabout magazine.  Birthday Weekend at Currawong details.

4. Trade Union Youth Week - Alan Scott represented BMC on the Leisure panel & Duke Tritton was part of the  Four Capitals Folk Tour.

5.  Reedy River at Eastwood Methodist church. Bill Wannan sends 10th birthday greetings. WEA

November 1964

1. Coming events - Christmas Party, Christmas Break-up night, Workshop night 12th January. Club picnic early in the year.  Personal - Alan Scott gave a talk on  Collecting Children's songs to Fellowship of Australian Writers.

2. Alan Scott will appear on ABC Radio taking about BMC. Articles by John Meredith & Duke Tritton will appear in anthology, Walkabout's Australia. Concert Party has made a record for Festival. Mike Leydon won song competition with his tune for Outback, Runner-up was Tony McLachlan with an arrangement for The Outside Track.

3. Review of Anniversary Dinner, Currawong weekend.

January 1965

1.  workshop nights on Tuesdays.  Annual picnic at Jibbon Beach, 21st February, AGM 23rd MArch,

2. Singabout is out. First Australian Newport Folk Festival was held at Rushcutters Park in January with a capacity audience of 2000, performers included Martyn Wyndham-Read, Tina Lawton & Gary Shearston.

3. Duke Tritton's Time Means Tucker has been re-released.  Concert Group activities - record  they recorded before Christmas is being released on 22nd February. Australia day weekend members will be joining the Wild Colonial Days Society at Araluen. Concert Party is again performing for Sydney Bushwalkers 

4. Concert Party is providing music for a talk on Australian Folk Song by Rex Whalan. Television's Project 64 showed Down the Darling with background music by Alan Scott, Jamie Carlin & John Dengate. Publications for sale

October 1965

1.  Workshop evenings on Tuesdays. 16th November Ned Kelly night to celebrate the 85th Anniversary. 23rd November - auction of  folk song material to clear the cupboard for musical instruments people give the Club.

1.  Membership around 50. Club had around 120 members 3 years ago. Bush band appeared  at Wool Week & on TV & wireless.

Sad news - Death of Stan Wakefield

3. Booklet of Stan Wakefield songs has been approved. Concert Party starts up again under leadership of Frank Maher.

4.  Record of Political Songs from Tom Morey, Labor candidate for Wentworth. Club Badges are available.

Editorial - WEA weekend on Australian Folk Music in July.

Fundraiser  for Stan Wakefield songbook raised £10.12.0, and more donations have been received. Concert Party has been busy - Stan Wakefield night, Singabout night, 13th June Lawson night, followed by a concert for pensioners at Paddington. Their next engagement is the WEA weekend.

The cupboard has been installed in the Fellowship room, ready for the library to be installed. New secretary - Alan Scott resigned due to lack of time, Miss Ola Catford replaced him.  Melbourne News - the Billabong Band is will working, though not on a regular basis. 

Want to come to a campfire? Balls Point Reserve 30th June. The Sentimental Bloke opens in Sydney this week.

December 1962


1.  Christmas break-up Party 18th December. First Workshop night 8th January. AGM 26th February. Stan Wakefield booklet almost ready to print, fundraising needed.

2. Club is forming a Collector's Group, contacts Jan Jones & Ken Fairey. Death of Dame Mary Gilmore. Singabout magazine has been released.


3. Duke Tritton is out of hospital.  Four Sisters played lively dance music for the Bush Singabout night. Rex Whalan is now MC. Clarence Strochnetter visited from Tasmania.  Concert Party report.

4. Barbara Strain visited Billabong Band members in Melbourne.

June 1963

1.  Campfire night 29th June. Next Singabout Night 13th July. Workshop night. Two recent Folk Song events that drew folk song groups together -  WEA Weekend School July 1962, & Victorian Bush Music Club + Victorian Folk-Lore Society's Folk Festival in May. Bush Music & Australian Folk Song groups are in 4 states,

Our History page only includes:  1963 saw the first big Moomba folk concert, at which VFMC members provided the bulk of the program. Following closely on this was a most successful weeklong folk festival in conjunction with the Folklore Society of Victoria and the Council for Adult Education. A change of name to the Victorian Folk Music Club was made to emphasise that the Club's interests included urban and contemporary songs.

2. Pete Seeger is visiting in September. Collectors Group has held several successful meetings. University of Sydney will establish an archive of field recordings. Review of Association of Sydney Folk-Singers Concert May, performers included Gary Shearston, Chris Kempster, Silvia Salisbury, Barbara Lisyak, Bill Berry, Jean Lewis & Marion Henderson.

3. Record review - Traditional Singers and Musicians of Victoria. Ann Banks has gone to England on a rush trip & hopes to be back before Christmas.  Concert Party performances.  Suggestions for a bus tour next year to visit the towns mentioned in Lazy Harrys.

4. Library donations would be appreciated.  Review of latest Singabout magazine. Club badges & back copies of Singabout are available.

September 1963

1. Ad for Pete Seeger concerts.  Next Singabout night 14th September. Annual pilgrimage to Henry Lawson's Statue 13th October, Concert Party will perform & this will be part of the Waratah Festival. Duke Tritton is organising a visit to Mudgee in October for Henry Lawson Commemoration at Eurunduree.

2. Collector's Group meeting. News of Past Activities - Campfire Night.

3. Gay Scott has been forced to retire as editor of Singabout because of ill-health.  Articles by Duke Tritton & John Meredith will appear in Walkabout magazine. Concert Party performances. Song Competitions by Australian Council of  Salaried & Professional Officers Association & Waterside Workers Federation. Sydney Trades & Labour Council & Elizabethan Theatre Trust offer £250 for an Australian folk opera.

1. Christmas Party will be held 17th December.  Club resumes 7th January.  Folk song recitals at Contemporary Theatre from Don Aynton & Glenn Tommisetti. New Theatre presents 4th revival of Reedy River.  Workshop nights.

2.  Collector's group.  News of past activities - Lawson Pilgrimage was held despite pouring rain, Concert Party performed.
3. Review of Pete Seeger's visit - he performed 4 times in Sydney & club members performed in a concert in his honour at Cremorne. He also visited the Club.
