Margaret & Bill Winnett, Sydney Irish Dance Ensemble 60th Anniversary
In
2018 the National Folk Festival’s Lifetime Achievement
Award will be presented to Sydney dancing couple Bill and Margaret
Winnett for their significant contribution to enriching folk music and
culture in this country.
A lifetime of dancing
Margaret began Irish dancing in 1957. Bill
and Margaret met in 1964 and were out dancing five or six nights per
week including performing with the Sydney Irish Ceili Dancers. They married in 1970 and joined Sydney Colonial Dancers in the 1980s and Sydney Playford Dancers in the 1990s.
Irish dancing is their first love and
since 1989 they have made twenty-one trips to Ireland, attending summer
schools, dance workshops and Ceilithe, immersing themselves in
traditional Irish dancing culture. Together
they share their absolute love of traditional Irish dancing with as
many as possible and have travelled extensively in Australia and
overseas doing just that.Piazza, Friday 2-3,

Bass Strait Ball
The Dividing Range Dancers from the ACT and NSW have an enduring interest in the dances of early Australia, including dances from the convict era, pastoral expansion, gold rushes and the growing cities. This year they have collaborated to present a program featuring dances from the southern states.
The Bass Strait Ball
Dance programs from colonial Victoria and Tasmania included couple dances, quadrilles and set dances. The display will showcase some of these dances.
